Navigating the world of travel business compliance can be overwhelming, especially with so many terms and regulations. This glossary provides a quick reference for key terms related to UK financial protection, including ATOL, ABTA, ABTOT, and IATA, helping you understand the essential components of travel industry licensing and consumer protection.

What is ABTA?

ABTA is a UK travel trade association for Travel Agents and Tour Operators. ABTA provides financial protection for Package holidays that do not include flights (e.g. coach, rail, cruise)

What is ABTOT?

What does ATOL stand for?

ATOL stands for Air Travel Organiser’s Licence.  ATOL protection is a financial protection scheme in the UK run by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). It ensures consumers are financially protected when purchasing holidays that include flights through an ATOL holder.

If the ATOL Holder goes out of business:

  • before the consumer travels the consumer can claim a refund from the ATOL Holder or
  • when the customer is on holiday, they can be repatriated back to the UK.

What is an ATOL protected Holiday?

An ATOL protected holiday is a package holiday that includes a flight and is covered by the Air Travel Organiser’s Licence (ATOL) scheme, which ensures financial protection for consumers in the UK.

What is the CAA?

The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) is the UK’s aviation regulator responsible for ensuring the safety of air travel. It also oversees ATOL, ensuring that Travel Companies selling air-inclusive holidays comply with ATOL regulations and protect consumers financially.

What is the difference between ABTA, ABTOT and ATOL?

ABTA protects non-flight holidays for Travel Agents and Tour Operators.

ABTOT protects non-flight holidays for Travel Organisers and holidays, including flights, under its ABTOT ATOL Franchise scheme.

ATOL primarily covers holiday packages that include flights, ensuring protection in case of insolvency.

What is IATA?

IATA (International Air Transport Association) is a global trade association for the world’s airlines. It sets standards for safety, security, and efficiency within the aviation industry, representing over 290 airlines.

What is IATA Certification/ Accredited?
